It has been more than 500 years since the Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley, commanded the seas from Scotland to Spain from the west coast of Ireland. Can any modern day woman match the determination and bravery of this great Irish legend? The organisers of a new adventure race have thrown down the gauntlet to the women of Ireland. This event will take place on Saturday September 14 on Clare Island. The race course is over 26.6km and involves running, cycling, climbing, and walking the plank. The adventure race is part the Festival of the Pirate Queen which will run for the first time from September 13 to 15.

Clare Island welcomes tall ship Thalassa

For the first time since Granuaile’s day, a tall ship will moor overnight at Clare Island. Scheduled to arrive on July 23, the barquentine Thalassa is an imposing and seaworthy sailor, rigged according to old tradition but fitted with every modern safety convenience. It is embarking on an Irish tour, leaving Belfast on Sunday July 14 and finishing in Galway on Sunday, July 28.

Clew Bay half marathon for July

The third annual Clew Bay half marathon will take place on Saturday July 20, starting and finishing in Louisburgh. The race will be run over a variety of landscapes and will feature breathtaking scenery of mountains, boglands, sea, and the islands of Inishturk, Clare Island, and the many other islands of Clew Bay. The course is challenging and exhilarating, its winding roads and ever-changing scenery making it a very enjoyable run.
